DIY Glitter Mason Jar Tutorial
Who doesn’t love glitter? Well, its a love hate thing because its messy! Ha ha. Glitter mason jars or adding glitter to a frame, a nic nac, burned out candle jar, wood, and so much more is pretty easy. 🙂
Glitter mason jars have also found their way into the decoration scheme of online casinos, adding a touch of sparkle and charm to the gaming ambiance. These dazzling creations bring a unique and enchanting element to the casino decor. The glitter mason jars, with their shimmering exteriors, capture the essence of excitement and celebration that’s synonymous with casinos. They often serve as decorative pieces on gaming tables or are used to hold casino-themed party favors and treats or even on online casino offices like at crazytimesgames.com website. The glittering jars create a whimsical and glamorous atmosphere that complements the lively environment of online casinos.

There are many existing tutorials but, here is my experience with glitter and mason jars! Well, really just glitter, Ive used glitter on many surfaces. Ive done some testing and used a few kinds of glues & glitters…
Are you ready to glitter a jar DIY style? You can use any jar not just a mason jar. Or maybe glitter a frame? Ok, lets get to it!

Im doing this tutorial with Elmers Glue-All. Ive used Mod Podge and spray adhesive, both work. Ive been using the Glue-All though, its a better price over Mod Podge. I buy it by the gallon now!
Love the stuff! I like Mod Podge but, it is more pricey when you just need some ‘basic’ crafty glue.
I’m sure you can use plain ole Elmers or even wood glue.
I wasn’t a fan of the spray adhesive, it never really ‘dries’, it can also come out clumpy, and the over spray… sticky mess it makes! I stick to the brush and glue. I’ll eventually do a post on using the glitter sprays.

I also find using the spray adhesive method the glitter sheds more even with several top coats.
Materials
Jar
Glitter
Paint brush
Newspaper- Sheet of paper
Gloss top coat
Container for glue
Glue: Elmers/Mod Podge
Optional: Spray paint
Ok, spray paint a base coat in your choice of color. This is optional, you can just do it on plain glass. I have a pink jar done, its a ‘dud’ jar I wont use so I’m salvaging it with glitter for this tutorial. Ive tried it with and without painting the jar.
You can do this with acrylic paint but I was not a fan, its just not as smooth as it is over spray paint or plain glass. The glue seemed to drag and bubble on the acrylics. While it worked its just, eh. I used it for my Snowmen mason jars.
With iridescent glitters the base color shows through so you can have some fun with colors doing your glitter jars.
This jar I’m using a dusty rose colored chunky glass glitter. I like chunky glitters.
Ok spread out the newspaper in your work area. For this tutorial I didn’t use it, it just wouldn’t look as pretty for pictures! Ha ha. I usually use newspaper because you know, its gets Everywhere! LOL.
Lay a sheet of paper under your jar on the newspaper. I do this to catch most of the glitter so I can pour it back in the jar. Make a light fold on one end of the paper when you are done and its like a pour spout right back into your glitter container.
You can use paper plates/sponge brushes like Life With Lori, she ‘tried it’! 🙂

I poured some glue into a 4oz mason jar as shown above. Its easy to use the brush and dip to apply the glue this way.
Grab your brush and paint an even coat of glue on the entire jar. Make sure you get into the crevices of the lettering. Light handed even brush strokes work best. Its okay to be semi thick, just not too thick so its dripping.
You can see the glue coating in the picture below.
Next pour your glitter on the mason jar. I do back and fourth even sprinkling the best I can, its glitter, its has a mind of its own… Fine glitter, dump a bit heavier to have a nice even coverage.
This chunky glass glitter covered nicely and rather quickly because of its weight and size.
I don’t like the roll method in a container, with some glitter it can create flat spots and that’s A Lot of glitter! LOL.
After you’ve covered the entire jar with glitter, tap the jar on your glitter catch paper a couple times to let some loose excess fall off. Let it dry for at least an hour or two then lightly brush the jar with a paint brush or any brush.
Do this lightly so you don’t take chunks of glitter off with the brush.
This will help minimize more shedding removing loose glitter before you top coat. This is fall off from just a few brush strokes. Add back into your glitter jar!

Time for top coat. They have glitter top coat which is just a gloss top coat in a smaller can for more money!
You can use any clear gloss top coat. Rust-Oleums clear enamel top coat is what I use a lot.
Top coat at least three to four times to minimize shedding and give light washing’s. You want to do five or six, go for it, the more coats the less shedding. It will also last for years because of the top coat.
I have also used gloss Mod Podge for a top coat, works well. Dont put on too thick because it can haze in spots, a nice even thin coat works. A bit of water so its more runny helps with hazing as well.

Your jars look tremendously great. I simply loved them and wanted to try. I ended up with the wrong spray paints I guess. They dint turn out like yours. Yet, other techniques filled the right space.

Love your jars. My question…can I make make candles with the spray painted glitter jars?
Ive only burned a tea lights and it was fine but a full on filled candle I dont know. You’ll have to test it. 🙂 Burn it in a safe area like outside.

Your jars look great! I started making a glitter jar but it seems that the modpodge I was using dried so fast that the glitter is not sticking to every part of the jar. I tried to do it quickly but it did not work out. Could I apply more of the normal modpodge or maybe the modpodge sealer to get more glitter to stick?
Thank you! 🙂 You can go in and touch up the spots. Ive done the same thing sometimes! haha. Just make the layer of glue a bit thicker so it doesnt dry so fast. If its fine glitter you can just do another whole layer. Chunky glitter doesn’t work as well for a second layer…

Thank you so much for the tutorial! I’ve had a lot of fun putting glitter on the mason jars for my daughters birthday! I applied a first coat of Mod Podge gloss luster, and it comes on white. Does the white disappear as it dries? The jar looked beautiful with the glitter on it, and now it looks like I spread glue on top of the glitter.
Yes the white will disappear. Maybe it was too thick?

Once you have put the clear coat on would you be able to use these for a candy bar? Or would they not be food safe?
They would be fine as long as no glitter gets in that jar. Id skip glittering the rim area.

Hey there! LOVE this idea! Am thinking of making small reindeer glitter jars for treats at the holidays – if I want to make 36 of them and they are about 3″ tall baby mason jars, how much glitter should I get!? I have NO clue and don’t want to over or under buy!! Help!!
It will depend on the size of the glitter. Something this size, use 2-3. Just take back one if you dont open it. I have found the brown I linked below at Walmart too.

Do you think these jars with glitter would work to make mason jar candles in? Or with the top coat would it be a fire hazard?
I try to stick to flameless candles but I have used tealights with no issues. 🙂

Hey Kelly .. it’s urgent!!
The gloss spray isn’t available in my country .. I have this crystal clear enamel from rust oleum which gives a glossy finish. But the thing is it says it’s applicable on wood and non ferrous metal. Glass surface ain’t specified. So can I use that or not for my glitter vase ??
You can use that, its more or less the same thing. 🙂

Hi, you’re website is so helpful! Thanks so much for posting so much awesome information. I just painted 9 mason jars with rustoleum gold spray and I plan to put gold glitter around the bottom. I already did one had. I’m finding the glitter is constantly shedding. I saw in your information, you recommend the glitter be sprayed to protect it. My concern is that I will get that spray on the rest of the har which I paired gold. Also, I’m wondering how to pack the jars once the glitter is on. I need to bring them to my parents 50th anniversary party. I know the gold will chip of the hard hit each other but I’m concerned about losing the glitter or ruining it. Any advice riyals be so helpful. Thanks so much!
For ‘dipped’ with glitter protect the painted area and just clear coat the glitter or you can use some sort of other paint on clear coat or using gloss finish Modge Podge.
Id wrap each jar in something like towels, paper towels, tissue paper etc. You can also make card board slits to place between jars so they dont clink together. Just wrap and handle carefully and you should be just fine. 🙂

I am currently working on som of these gold dipped mason jars for my upcoming wedding! I’m having trouble finding the right gold color that isn’t dull or too copper or too yellow!! I love this color of gold spray paint & glitter!! Can you tell me specifically what brand of gold spray paint this is? I’ve found that there are multiple “golds” for certain brands, but that the picture on the front is different…could you specifically tell me what brand, color, & if you know, the picture that is on the spray can? Hi ! I found your blog while looking for spray painting tips. I’m painting a number of jars and a couple large lanterns for my upcoming wedding next month. After reading a couple of your posts, I do have a few questions.
Based on your “best gold” post, I like the color of the Rustoleum gold. You mentioned that top coat dulls the shine and if we top coat, just add another coat of gold to add the shine. But if I don’t top coat, is the gold going to tarnish and show fingerprints, etc ? Which way do I go ?? Top coat or no coat?
I’m also interested in glitter spray that lives short of a sheer glitter finish … what are your thoughts on brand? I may look at some gold / iridescent .. endless options!

The gold will just tarnish as you cant protect it… boo I know. Those shiny metallic finishes are best not handled often. You want the yellow gold just go for it! Easily use a gloves when packing them up/set up for wedding at your venue.
Speaking of, when packing wrap everything or whatever so the jars/lanterns dont clink or rub together during the drive, they can chip/scratch. 🙂
If your looking for a light glitter coat use the sprays or if you are looking for glitter thats not so ‘chunky’ use some fine gold glitter with the glue method.
Noting, with the glitter sprays, they tend to blastout of the can! haha. Just be careful first try, dont be like me and blast it all over! LOL. The sprays can clog too.. I have a love-hate relationship with the sprays…

I wouldn’t think so. Ive used Elmers, Modge Podge, and Wood glue! Just what ever you use make sure its dries clear. 🙂

I love the color you used! I’ve being searching hi and lo for dusty rose glitter. Do you mind if I ask, where you got it? Also, does painting the jar help with the color of the glitter?
I bought the glitter at Micheal’s. It was on clearance so I don’t know if they carry it anymore…. Its Recollections brand though.
You dont have to paint the jar. I like to though. More for iridescent colors because the paint shows through. I couldn’t find mint green glitter so I painted the jar mint and used an iridescent white glitter so it looks like mint glitter. 🙂
