Rust-Oleum has many shades of gold. I cannot tell the difference between the two color wise with the Rust-Oleum in the green and white can like pictured above.

I like the white can because the spray nozzle is better like pictured below.

Valspar, Rust-oleum Pure Gold, Design Master 24 Karat

Bottom left to right:

Krylon, Rust-oleum, Rust-oleum Mirror Effect, Rust-oleum Metallic Warm Gold

Krylons and Valspars Gold, not a yellow gold. Krylon is a blush tone gold color. Valspar is more like a bronze color, I guess maybe a golden bronze?

Anyone into to an antiqued bronze/brass/gold look Valspar gold would be up your alley. I do love the color of Krylons gold its just not yellow. I think its a ‘modernized’ gold.

Krylon and the Design Master 24 Karat have a similar color tone.

For me, Rust-Oleum is winner winner chicken dinner as the ‘best‘ gold spray paint. Im choosing because they are yellow gold shades. Good coverage too, they all have equal coverage. I’ll go over the other colors of gold below.

I just want to note: When you clear coat most metallic paints it dulls the finish, even with a high gloss top coat. Metallics just don’t need a top coat. If you used a top coat… and bah, looks eh now.. Just spray another coat of your color over the top coat.

Fixed! Do light coats though because you don’t want your paint to wrinkle/bubble like this photo below. This usually happens because its a heavy coat and ‘too wet’ so its breaking down your other coats making it wrinkle.

Also gold will tarnish just like jewelry. Any of the shiny metal finishes will tarnish. You’ll see finger prints, water spots, etc.

Use the shiny metal finishes more for decor pieces not handled often.

More gold spray paint colors from Rust-oleum. Mirror Effect, Metallic Warm Gold and Pure Gold.

The Mirror Effect doesn’t look much different than their gold picture above in the post. Kind of a ‘fail’ for a mirror effect like Krylons Looking Glass or Rust-oleums Mirror Effect Silver. Both are pretty equal for the mirror look.

Spend the money on the big cans above I declared ‘winner’ if you want a yellow gold metal finish…

Pictured above.

Rust-oleum Mirror Effect, Rust-oleum Metallic Warm Gold, Rust-oleum Pure Gold

I dig the Metallic Warm Gold, its more of a muted gold with a shimmer finish. Not a huge fan of the Pure Gold but, it may work for you.

The Warm Gold/Pure Gold would be recommended for things handled more often like knobs or furniture. They wont tarnish like the shiny metal gold.

Using on knobs or the like you use often you will probably have to do a touch up eventually. Nature of the beast. ha ha.

Feels almost complete. Comparing the Montana black (gold). The goldest gold seems like mirror effect, but the pure gold might resist that tarnish look, & be tougher.

Any suggestions for keeping paint from rubbing off of glass vases? I use Rustoleum Mirror effect on glass vases on the outside but when I try to put them back in the case, the paint rubs off. Going to use these at a wedding in August.

You may need another coat and wrap the jars in foam, paper towels, etc, something so the jars do scrape together. Its painted glass so paint scratches easier. πŸ™‚

    Hi Kelly,
I am considering painting a lace stencil on clear vases using Rust-Oleum Glitter Interior Wall Paint 32oz-Harvest Gold. Have you ever brushed painted on glass? I read the description on the website and it says it can be used on many surfaces. I am wondering how well it will cover. I was thinking this may be more cost effective than spray paint.

I have painted glass with acrylic ad latex paints. Is and actual stencil or a piece of lace you are using? If lace Id use sprays personally. The paint will be just fine on glass, just make sure its nice and clean and Id top coat to minimize it coming off easier.

Reporting back to let you know from my previous post, that spraying with β€œturtle wax express shine spray wax”, letting dry, then a gloss top coat keeps the original metallic properties…most definitely works! I let the metallic spray paint dry 24 hours, didn’t a single application of the spray wax, let dry and then top coated with a clear gloss enamel spray from a Rust-Oleum. We may have a miracle on our hands! Lol

And no shops seem to stock The Krylon Colormaster in Copper you recommended in your other post, I chanced upon the Krylon Premium 18Kt Gold Plate in Copper and wondered if you have tried it?

I’m spraying a steel car outside using the Rust-Oleum Sea Mist Pearl Metallic Universal Formula, and I want to clear coat it afterwards. How long should I wait before my base coat of Sea Mist and adding my Clear Coat of Triple Thick Rust-Oleum? I called the company and looks like the triple thick isn’t far from the automotive Rust-Oleum clear coats! Thanks for your input!

Apply it when dry but with that formula you really doesnt need to top coat. That said, if you do make sure you apply light layers of top coat so the Sea Mist doesn’t wrinkle/bubble.

Hi Kelly, I have a small aluminum screw cap I want to try spray painting – but one area I am still a bit puzzled about is durability. What kind(s) of paint should I use for a cap that will see repeated use whether it’s metallic or not? I would like a metallic style finish, but I need long lasting durability foremost. Will I need to apply a clear coat finish on top of the metallic, and if so, what kind do you recommend? (whether it’s metallic or not) I read somewhere else on your blog about the top coat dulling the metallic finish down so that’s something on my mind too. I desire the best possible results πŸ™‚ Any help and guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

You’ll probably have to touch it up over time, its a painted surface with repeated use, just the reality of it. haha.

    Hi,

I tried looking but couldn’t quite find my answer. Do I need to prime wine bottles before spraying them with metallic spray paint? If so, which one do you recommend? Also, you said you prefer the Rustoleum over the Valspar brand? I just want most inexpensive and best brand that will hold. Also, how long do I need to wait to dry?

Priming will only help but not necessary. Really the metallic shade will be a personal preference. Most metallics are dry enough to touch within an hour. πŸ™‚

Hi. I’m currently painting my old drums a green sparkle. I’m using the Rustoleum glitter spray paint. I need to put a top coat or two on as drums get moved around alot. I’m wondering if I should use a satin finish instead of gloss. I’ve seen glossy drums and you can’t really see the color.. only the lights reflecting off them. Any advice? Thank you.

    01/27/2016 at 12:02 am Reply
    • Id do 4-6 top coats for something like that, its going to be handled. You will have chipping so try to handle with care the best you can. Its drums so… you can only ‘care’ so much! ha ha. You could use the satin finish, the color will show for sure but it wont be as sparkly in person as using a gloss top coat. You’ll have less reflection, but will still have some though.

You also may want to consider loose glitter and glue. I think it will hold up better than the spray for what you are doing. You can check out my spray vs loose glitter post, this may help you too. https://kastyles.co/spray-glitter-vs-loose-glitter/

There are two versions, ‘copper metallic’ with an ‘elegant’ finish, or ‘bright copper metallic’ with a more shiny finish. Which would you say is the one to go for? • That color looks like it will be more of a yellow gold over a rose gold. Have you checked the hardware stores in your area? Or do you have any craft stores like here in the US?

There’s a craft store called Hobby Craft, and also DIY stores that sell a really wide variety of spray paint. I hate buying in those places, but could always ask if I can spray samples maybe :/

        • I know those craft store get you on the prices. :/ Do they do coupons in the UK? If I buy at the craft stores here I use coupons, our craft stores usually have a coupon every week for one item at 40% off. The stores have phone apps I can pull the coupons up on my phone. Hopefully they offer something like that there. πŸ™‚

I am painting mason jars for my nephews wedding. I need a metallic gold, which is the best brand? And what can I do to prep, before I paint? Thanks

    • My favorite is Rustoleum brand for gold. Just make sure everything is clean and dry. πŸ™‚ Handle the jars carefully. When bringing to the venue wrap gently and use cardboard or the like between the jars so they wont clank together, the paint can chip easily. Good luck and I hope the wedding is fabulous!

Hi, I’m trying to paint a mason jar metallic gold (Valspar). When I sprayed it I loved how it looked but then I noticed the paint could easily be scratched off. I then used a acrylic sealer and it did something weird to the color and I didn’t like it so much. How do you get the metallic colors to stay on without messing up the color? Do you heat set it in the oven, if so do you do it right after you paint it or do you have to wait a certain time before putting it in the oven? TIA

    • Spray paint scratches easily on glass, its just the way it is. You just to handle carefully. πŸ™‚ Top coats turns metallic weird. Spray another quick coat of metallic over the top coat so it looks good again.

      • You could try gold enamel paint or the gold leafing sheets. πŸ™‚ The gold spray paint surely leaves finger prints. Maybe use glove to handle the piece so you wont leave finger prints. Ive done another coat to hide the prints too, then handle with care so I dont leave prints again.

Hi, I’m painting some antique metal dresser pulls for a project I’m refinishing and I’m looking into painting the pulls a satin copper color. Do you have any suggestions on a spray that would be best? Some of the paints you show above have that bronzed look but deceiving because the can says gold. What can you suggest? I know I definitely want it a soft copper color. thanks

Thanks for this very helpful information. We just purchased a new home and I am going crazy with spray painting ideas. I bought krylon metallic copper because it was the only copper that looked like what I want (ummmm…totally based on the cap colour…but I have found that the rustoleum metallics in the slim can actually match the cap)
My question is whether or not metallic paint would be suitable on glass pendent light shades? Would the shade get warm and damage the paint? Would a primer help on the glass? The shades are a frosted glass. I was just hoping to save money and not replace them because lighting is expensive and my pockets are empty. Thanks so much!

    07/18/2015 at 6:30 pm Reply
    • Sorry for the delay, you were stuck in my spam!

I would think the copper paint on the light shades would be just fine. πŸ™‚ Ive made candle holders with spray paint and its been just fine. Most bulbs only generate so much heat really… Over time the inside of the shade facing the bulbs may change color if the light is used often. Kind of like how the sun fades stuff, if you know what I mean. Easy fix though and just do a refresher coat of paint. πŸ™‚

Personally I wouldn’t primer, save your money, just paint away for this project. I hope that helps if you haven’t painted already! Id so just go for it, paint anything and everything! Ha ha.

I just got a new bike today and I want to paint some parts of it gold. Would you recommend the same type of spray paint that you recommended for door knobs, since my bike will be outside with moisture? I like Rustoleum spray paint as well because it is more of a true gold, while the others are more rose gold.

    • Yes. You may even want to go to an auto store and look for a gold there instead, they have some gold tone shades at auto stores near me. They are even more durable for something like bike parts. πŸ™‚

It was decided that spray painted wine bottles (with flowers in them would be centerpieces for a bridal shower I’m helping to throw. The girl that did them just gave them to me to deliver to the florist. She had them separated by cardboard pieces in boxes and they got all marked up. So I went out and got more paint and repainted them today. Now I’m nervous that they will get marked up yet again when I travel with them. They are spray painted with rustoleum matte silver metallic. Today is Friday and I have to travel with them on Monday. Should I top coat them at all? I feel like you said this is a bad color to top coat. And I’m already pressing the time limit with painting them today and moving them on Monday I know but they looked awful. But how would you wrap them or travel with them so that they don’t chip or mark?

    05/22/2015 at 11:12 pm Reply
    • That will be pretty! Just pack them well. I ship with cardboard slits and I also wrap them in these cute bags. Wrapping them in the bags helps with the cardboard from scratching them. I would just wrap them in a towel or even a paper towel, just something to protect it from the cardboard. Then add the cardboard slits, the slits help them from banging together when moving them and causing chips.

The sliver will turn a mess with a topcoat. Turns it so muddy looking.

Just wrap them well and you’ll be fine! πŸ™‚

      Good luck!

        • I like satin and matte, Im more into mattes. I have matte everything! ha ha. I just clear coat with the finish I need. Some of the colors I like are gloss so I turn them matte! πŸ™‚ Its really a personal preference on the finish you want.

Valspar clear coats are my fav, they have matte, satin, and gloss.

    Hi!
I am using the Valspar gold metallic. I spray painted some overlays for ikea furniture, and now when I touch the part I spray painted, the gold color seems to rub off and get darker wherever I touch it. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions? It has been two days since I spray painted so I am pretty sure it is completely dry by now. Thanks!

    03/16/2015 at 8:47 pm Reply
    • Hi Celina, The darkness I think is skin oils, its like it tarnishes like silver. Ive noticed finger prints on my gold sometimes. The rubbing off, Im not sure, maybe the surface needed more prep work? Could of even been an old or dud can. Ive had those a time or two or three… ha ha.

Id try a Rustoleum color instead. I think they have a more durable finish for things like knobs and handles with their metallic. Im not a big fan of Valpars metallic, Love the colors but the metallic, eh.

The metallic in these style cans are some of my favs. http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/universal/universal-metallic-spray-paint

This formula has a durable finish too. http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/stops-rust/metallic

I think you’ll have better luck with different paint. If you paint over the other color do light coats so you dont wrinkle and bubble!

I actually just updated the post about this issue! πŸ™‚

Topcoat any glitter. You can use regular clear gloss topcoat or enamel topcoat, not the ‘glitter topcoat’. Modge Podge and glitter work too, just do the topcoat, do a few. I guess I have to add some glitter tips! LOL

Having a terrible time trying to get sea shells , large clam shells, painted with Gold spray paint. I purchase a small can from my local hardware store but after 24 hours I can rub off the paint from the shell. I am very sad because I had hoped to use these shells for wrapped candy but I do not want people to get gold paint on their fingers when they pick up their shell. I went to Lowes today and purchased a clear polyurethane to paint over the gold paint and hopefully make a seal. I wonder of I had used Rust-oleum paint if it would rub off. If this doesn’t work I won’t have anything to put my party favors in.

You mention using a clear coat to protect the finishes but then you also talk about not using a clear coat over the metallic paint, is it dulls the finish.
So what kind of clear coat does not dull the finish of metallic paint?
I used Krylon gold and used a Restoleum semi gloss which dulled it completely as well as a Rustoleym enamel.
I feel it’s necessary to put a protective coat over the metallic gold. I’m using the paint on doorknobs. They are beautiful and metallic in shine, but the paint dulls down overtime with use similar to what the clearcoat is doing right now on some newly painted doorknobs.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

    • Ive tried a bunch of ways and there is nothing that can be done, it dulls it… Boo! I have sprayed another light coat over the clear coat to bring the shine back. You might want to try some other gold paint, like an enamel because its a door knob and used often. Ive seen paint at the craft store. Or try that gold leaf foiling and top coat that. πŸ™‚

Hi Kelly! When you spray paint mason jars, do you leave the cap on? Seems like when you unscrew them then underneath the ridges wont be painted. Do you spray the jar and the cap separately? Wont the paint also go inside this way? Or do you not care if it goes inside since it’s the same color?

Sorry for all the questions, thank you!

            02/18/2015 at 9:57 pm
          • Hi!

For most of the jars I sell yes, I paint them with the lid and seal on it to keep the inside paint free.

Sometimes I paint the rim and I just use the inner seal.

Sometimes I even tape off the rim so its totally paint free like to use for food, new clean silver lid, seal, and rim.

Ask any questions you want! πŸ™‚
