Rust-Oleum Metallic Spray Paints
I haven’t tried all the colors just yet but have used a bunch when I sold mason jars on the internet.
I’ll keep updating this post as I try more colors. Update: I added more colors below. 11/6/2016
Rust-Oleum Metallic is a shimmer type finish and very smooth. Im going to list the colors in my pictures. These are the trigger spray nozzle cans. The Universal.
The copper is Krylon though, jar top middle. The rest of the jars are Rust-Oleum.

Top Row Left to Right:
Oil Rubbed Bronze, the Krylon Copper, Satin Nickel
Bottom row Left to Right:
Champagne Mist, Flat Burnished Amber, Aged Copper, Flat Chestnut
Aged Copper again.

Updated Colors.
Rust-oleums Metallic Rust and Sienna Mist. I think these are some nice fall colors.
More colors, Champagne Pink, Pearl Mist and Sea Mist. Of course I had to try the Sea Mist, hello… Aqua! haha.
I Love all these colors! They all have a shimmer finish.
I flipped the jars so you could see the finish more.

Some other golds.
The middle Jar is called Metallic Warm Gold 286524.
More silver gray shades.
The Flat Soft Iron and Dark Steel. Pretty close in color, the Dark Steel has a bit more of a shiner finish.(Dark Steel jar on right)
The mini jar shown here is the Titanium Silver. Has that shimmer finish and a nice silver.

Ya like that mess of a can? LOL. It happens sometimes… The two pint size jars below are the Krylon and Rust-oleum silvers. You can barely tell the difference.
You can see the Titanium Silver is pretty close in color too.
That was the last of updated colors…
The blue is auto paint all the rest are Rust-Oleum metallics. Dupli Color is the blue, was discounted way back when so I dont remember the color…
Now, onto more Rust-Oleum metallic style finishes. This line is more ‘metal’ looking. Shiny. Krylon makes some shiny colors too.

The copper, yellow gold and silver are the Rust-Oleum. I love them all! LOL
You can see how the finish is more shiny like metal over the other metallic pictured above.
Ive also used some of the hammered metal finishes. Its has a textured look. Works good for a surface with some imperfections.
I recommend using the shiny finish metallics with more decorative pieces, it tarnishes with oils from your hands and water will leave spots.
I also saw a clear top coat pearl finish so you can give a metallic like finish on any color. They are all in the same style trigger spray cans. Found them at Home Depot and Amazon.

Hi, I see youβve said you donβt use a clear coat bc most paints donβt need it and bc it can dull the finish. What about for high touch areas? Would you use a clear coat, or a specific paint? Rβoleum Universal line? Automotive line? Iβd like to do my refrigerator handles…so, a lot of use. Thanks!
I dont use clear coats on the shiny metal finishes. Other metallic finishes you can, high use area a clear coat will only help it last longer. You still may have to touch it up over time if its used that much.

I’m super frustrated. After successfully painting about a dozen faux tin 2×4 tiles for my ceiling (after having successfully done this years ago in another room) I’m now getting muddy, mottled gray patches instead of my shiny silver. (Rustoleum specialty metallic) Noticed that the spray nozzles have changed. Not sure if this is causing the paint to lay differently? I can literally get one tile to do great and the next is screwy, both from the same can. This has now happened with at least 2-3 different cans. I’m angry because this isn’t a cheap venture and it’s time consuming and I need to get it done. Any thoughts?
Are you shaking the cans enough? I do shaking between like, if Im painting 10 jars Im shaking again by jar 3 again. I find the silver can be a bit finicky… Maybe try the Titanium Silver, the Universal formula.
I was researching this paint and stumbled upon this vlog for the same exact reason you described above. I painted some picture frames and some are good but others blotchy, Iβm on my second can of paint and same thing keeps happening, super frustrating!!
Oh boy, now I want 10 cans instead of 2! (smile)

I have burned tealights in painted jars and its been fine. That said, I dont do it often or burn for hours and hours.

Hi, Kelly. Your posts are extremely helpful when it comes to spray painting. Could you recommend a gold spray paint to use on planters for my parents 50th wedding anniversary? Iβm looking for a silver gold (if there is such a thing) because the tables will be set with stainless flatware but gold is the traditional color for 50. I plan to use Boston ferns in the planters for centerpieces. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you so much!!!!

Not really a silver gold that I know of but, you could achieve that with mixing some acrylic metallics. It will just take a bit more time to paint.
Id just rock the gold and maybe add a silver accent to the pots. Paint a silver heart or maybe a silver band of ribbon.

Hi, your blog article on the Rustoleum metallics was very helpful in selecting a color for a metal desk. Unfortunately because I am doing several projects at once, I grabbed the wrong can and sprayed Dark Steel all over my lovely prepped and primed desk parts when I really planned to use Flat Soft Iron. Something didn’t seem right but I didn’t figure it out right away. Anyway do you know how the Flat Soft Iron would come out if I were to go ahead and spray it right over the Dark Steel? The desk is just way too sparkly now and I really had my heart set on the other color. And I really, really don’t want to do anymore sanding or removing of finishes.
Just paint over it. I may take some extra coats to fully cover it. Donβt spray too wet, do light coats so you donβt get paint wrinkling.

Hi there! Very informative post. I bought some wall decor that looked gold online but is really brass. Bummer. I thought about spray painting it with gold but it is etched with beautiful flowers and scrolls that I’m worried would get lost under the paint…what do you think? Will the etching still be visible?

Hi, I love all the Rust-Oleum metallics and have used them on several items! I repainted my metal welded cirlce “God Bless Texas” with the aged copper, beautiful. Painted some old metal outdoor bar stools in krylon copper, a metal bird house in krylon copper, and also my husband added a motion sensor to a copper outdoor light and I painted the added plastic brown sensor with the copper so it would match light fixture!

I tried to find the Valspar Bronze color you referred to as being the farthest jar on the left in the pic with your old brown backdrop, but I can’t find it! Can you help me find a link online or tell me where you got it? It’s the perfect color for my fixtures! π
Hi! I’m looking online for Valspar Bronze, which if I’m reading correctly is the first jar on the left in the photo in front of your “old” brown backdrop but I can’t find it online! I bought it at Lowes. I dont think they make it anymore… I have not seen it at Lowes this past couple years. You may want to try the craft stores in the model car paint sections, they have mini cans of paint that may work or try this auto paint. Dupli-Color Wheel Coating Bronze 11 oz. Aerosol – HWP105. It looks pretty close to the Valspar. Auto paints work just fine for household projects. π

Hi, I tried doing this the other day and my jars have paint runs. I don’t know what I did wrong.
Try keeping the spray can at least 12 inches from your object and do light coats. Usually 2-3 light coats. You can check out my tips post, this may help you a bit. π https://kastyles.co/spray-painting-tips/
You can at times repair the drips by sanding then smooth and reapply paint.

Average is 5-7 pints per can of spray paint. 2-3 cans will do it. π
Hello! I am getting married in August and am working on some planters for center pieces. Which copper color spray paint would you recommend? I really like the look of the last copper mason jar on your post, but am not sure if that’s the hammered look you mentioned, or if it had a clear finish on top. I was looking at Rust-oleum’s bright coat metallic finish. Your post is amazingly helpful too. Thank you!

Thank you for doing this site! Just a quick question, how did you get the copper jar to shine so much in the last picture? Did you just use your favourite rust-oluem copper spray or did you use something else to finish it as well? We want to paint a giant black decorative cookie cutter to look like a more classic copper cookie cutter. This newbie could use your direction. Do I prime first because it’s a dark colour?

Its the type of copper spray paint, its the Rustoleum in the green can. Its shiny like that. You dont need to prime but wont hurt if you do. π
I’m assuming you painted these on the outside. They’re really pretty. I’ve tried chalk and milk paint but found it lacking fir my use. I’d like to try this. Did you prime?
I usually dont prime. The paints are so good now a days. And yes I painted the outside. π

You wont have to top coat the Universal line. π It will work good for planters outside. You may have to touch up a couple of seasons later though.

I found these colors by accident, looking for a ” unique ” way to spray large bouncy balls, that I covered in papier-mΓ’chΓ©, to make large Christmas ornaments. I have a retail store in these will be hanging from the ceiling. I love all these colors, however my ceiling is black and the top part of the walls is black. The walls are done in a wood pallet sections. With these colors, I’m thinking these would look good with the earthy tones on the wall. In your opinion, what colors would look best. I have already bought several cans of different colors that you have notated, but I wanted to see what you think it before I started the actual spraying of the balls.
That sounds so fun! π Id go with coppers and golds. They make so many shades now. Really I think all the colors could work! haha.

I chose krylon copper, and rustoleums’ aged copper, Champagne mist, satin nickel, flat chest nut, I wondered about the champagne pink? I also bought a few cans of pearl mist just out of curiosity.
I haven’t tried the pink and the pearl yet! I just saw them recently. Some aqua too! They are on the ta do list. LOL.

Hi! I realised rust-oleum metallic gold has 2 different kind of can (one with fancy spray cap(the last picture in the post) and another is the normal round cap) Are they any different? In which picture can I see the differences of the two?
With the Rust-oleum there is no difference in color, both work well. π I just like the white can better just because of the spray nozzle.

Oh my do I love me some mason jars! I loved your post as well, it has been very helpful! I have a project I want to work on soon where I’ll be spraying an item to make it look ombre. I want it to go from black to gold but wasn’t sure if it would look good going from black straight to gold or transitioning from black to a darker gold to a lighter gold. I want to try to stay to true golds, no rose or anything too bronze. What would you do and use? I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Valspar or Rust-oleum. I rarely use primer though, most spray paint today is paint and primer in one. π
Really depends on the surface. Ex: I painted a metal file cabinet, it was dark brown. Painted white with a Krylons Chalky Finish, I primed it white first because it was so dark. Gives it better coverage with the Chalky finish.
