Krylon Chalk Finish Paint

Some goodies about Krylon Chalky Finish spray paint.

Oh yes, chalky spray paint! Hallelujah, right?! Let me say, with the colors Ive tried, Krylon did well. Im kind of a Krylon ‘hater’.

Their Masters formulas anyways…

I think the chalk paint has really great coverage and its Ultra matte. Krylon also has a spray wax top coat offered for the chalk paints.

The wax top coat came out a bit blobby and collected blobs at the nozzle too. Even after shaking A LOT!

Blot those blobs, the wax spray does have a yellow hue. Besides the blob issue the wax spray seems alright but, I haven’t used any other chalk paint or wax though.

My experience being a DIY geek… other waxes on the market will work better for a top coat. Particularly for furniture and large pieces. Go another route for a wax finish.

Ok, onto some colors!

Tidal Blue, its a great teal color. Rust-Oleum also has a color very similar called Lagoon. Its a bit darker though.

This is the Bonnet Pink, I think its a nice soft pink color. I just used a top coat with the pink instead of the spray wax, it worked just fine.

Valspar flat clear coat, its my favorite! I’m obsessed with it! LOL

I LOVE how matte it is, I’m a matte finish fan! Those of you that love Ultra matte like me you’ll love this spray paint.

I also used the spray wax in my dog treat jar post. The colors I used were glossy and I wanted a more matte finish. I was just using it up, I wont buy it again until its improved.

Update: For furniture Ive been using Rust-oleum Chalked for a top coat.

Onto gray and ivory. They have two gray colors one is cooler and one is warmer. Colonial Ivory and Misty Gray.

Um, yea, ‘lost’ the caps… as per usual…

This one is a ‘cooler’ gray. The other I saw was Paver Gray, more of a warm ‘tanish’ gray.

These two jars do not have a top coat. Supppperrrr matte and smooth!

Ivory again. I decorated the jar from above. ๐Ÿ™‚

You can find this chalky finish spray paint at the craft stores. Use a coupon, its more pricey over spray paint! Ive seen it AC Moore, Hobby Lobby and Micheal’s.

The chalk paints and chalky finishes always seem to be more expensive. I buy mine at Valu Home Center in my area.

You can see more colors used from Cyndy at Creativity Exchange.ย She used white and another gray shade I didn’t even know they had. We are both diggin’ this paint.

Update: 11/20/2016ย  You can see I used it on my file cabinet and stand in this post.

I just painted a very old table with Krylon Spray Chalky Paint. The finish is very rough and gritty. I put two coats on. What did I do wrong? How can I fix it? This was my first try at Chalk paint. Thank you!!

May have been a bad can or needs to be shaken more. Sand it with a fine sand paper and add more coats. Just dont do it too heavy as the paint can wrinkle.

Can I spray wood crates with it? Sand then first?

You can spray your crates. As for sanding, depends on the surface. My crates are smooth so I would not sand them. Hope that helps. ๐Ÿ™‚

Can this be used on laminated furniture like a crib? Have a NICE hand me down crib that I believe it’s laminated, it’s shiny.

I love the chalk spray paint idea and wanted to know if I could use it on the crib?

You can paint it. You may want to give it a light sanding first if its shiny, it will adhere better. ๐Ÿ™‚

Where did you get the first two jars shown here?

They are vintage jars form an antique shop. They are pre 1950. You can find them on Ebay, Etsy, or sometimes Craiglist. Check shops in your town and flea markets too.

Ooh! Awesome post, thanks soo much for the info! I held off on buying these awhile ago, definitely changing my mind now. AND the flat top coat! Do you think it would be safe to spray an already-top-coated piece of furniture with that to mattify it, or should these be used on spray painted accessories only?

Ive painted several pieces of furniture. ๐Ÿ™‚ I top coat my chalky finish on the furniture with Rustolems Chalked Wax Top Coat, its super matte as well. Its a paint on not a spray.

  17. I found a krylon color I love online, but Iโ€™m not sure it comes in gloss. If I use the polyacrylic after painting, would it be okay to use a satin krylon spray paint? Thanks so much!

Hey there! Yes, Ive turned mattes into gloss and gloss into mattes, its all in the top coat. ๐Ÿ™‚ Just use a gloss top coat. My favorite is Valspars, its super smooth.

About how many coats do you think you get per can? I’m going to work with 7, 16 oz jars.

    12/17/2015 at 6:03 pm Reply
    • You should probably be fine with one can for seven pints. I average 5-7 pints for any can of spray paint. ๐Ÿ™‚ That said, Id maybe buy two just in case and take it back if you dont use it. Sucks going for more paint mid project! ha ha. Good luck! ๐Ÿ™‚
